027. Lessons on Loneliness

Micah 7:1-9
 
The personal message from Micah to us is not one of dreary pessimism or from a downer mentality, it is one of hope and beauty rooted in the unchangeableness of Jesus and the glory and grace of the gospel. Remember the immense personal loss God sustained on our behalf. What love! We must guard and protect our hearts only for God. That is the true remedy for loneliness in the midst of a corrupt and wicked world.

Today we start by clarifying that God does not overlook the sins of others merely because persecution is a necessary part of the Christian life. Although we are told to expect it, that does not excuse the wrongdoing of others. We also learn that Daniel’s choice to obey God rather than his earthly authority had the greatest influence on the king’s faith in God.

In those moments when people lie about you and try to gain favoritism through flattery and deceit, remember you are not alone. Daniel, and many other prophets, and ultimately Christ Himself experienced the same treatment. I know this is not easy, and it hurts, but remember that God sees the heart and He is the one we should be trying to please. God is always watching, and it is His approval that really matters for life and eternity.

What does it look like when a person is truly blameless? When we started this series, we referenced a comment Ironside wrote that there is a needed condition for understanding the mind of God. Daniel demonstrated that desire to separate from anything that is opposed to God and to obey God which is required before God reveals Himself all the way back in chapter one. And we are still seeing this character in chapter six.

It is so important that the Christian study prophecy, for therein lies our hope. As we are learning, prophecy only instills fear and panic in the hearts of the lost because they have been “living it up” in defiance of God. But for the saved, it is a comfort and a necessary reality-check. Keep your eyes on eternity and not on the perceived prosperity of the wicked in this life.

This is what it looks like when God shows up. The lost are not living it up anymore, but the saved are reminded of the all-sufficient help of their God. Prophecy is the source of hope and peace for those whose trust is in Jesus, but it strikes fear into those who live as if He does not exist.
